  • Summary

My dream is to help operate a communal clay oven for all camps to use to make pizza/flatbread/simple breads. I would be repairing an oven already on site for use.

    Full description of the concept

The concept is simple, I will be making small reperations to a clay oven that is already on site so that we can use the oven for producing breads or anything else anyone would like to bake.

DISCLAIMER: We haven't had explicit permission from the land owners to utilise the oven, if we are not given permission then this dream will unfortunately not become reality.

The initial costs will be a small amount for clay and sand to repair the oven which is in misuse. Secondary costs would be for well seasoned wood (probably pine) to fire the oven. Third costs would be for a reasonable amount of flour, oil, salt, dried herbs and minced garlic so that basic breads can be produced every day for those helping with the oven or any hungry heads around.

The oven would be communal, a blackboard (or something) will be brought so that the use of the oven can be organised.

It is important that people understand that a clay oven like this is not like an electric oven at home, having the correct temperature for baking specific things is not easily controlled.

It is however very easy to have the oven very hot (~300°c), which is perfect for making flatbread/pizza, so this would be my main recommendation for those wanting to use the oven. A thin garlic bread can cook in minutes and will be easy to dish out.

After the flatbread rush is finished the oven will begin to cool down. Traditionally during this period people would bake pies, as this is a good temperature (200-300°c). If any burners like to make pies they could try an oil based pastry (as butter won't keep well in the heat) and make some pies during this time.

Once the oven has cooled to around 220°c the breads can be cooked. There will be limited space so communication is key to ensure no one has a beautifully risen dough that won't become an even more beautiful bread.

After the bread traditionally people would dry herbs or make meringues, but I doubt we'll manage any of that..

The plan would be to start the fire early in the morning to make flatbreads for breakfast then bake some bread before lunch before refiring the oven for more flatbreads in the afternoon and a second bake. There could even be a third firing in the evening.

Before we all had an oven in our homes, the community oven would be a place of gathering, sharing stories and baking bread. I want to bring this tradition to Kiez Burn.

How do you plan to Strike the Project?

I will tidy the area and actually leave some things behind (I know that's against the rules) but what I will be leaving behind is an oven in better condition that the one we found at the beginning of the week. All the Ash from the oven will be collected in binbags and

How can other burners co-create with you?

Everyone who wants to use the oven at some point will need to get in touch with me and some point or another. I will however need help with a few things: my car won't have space to take enough wood for the week. A large delivery needs to be organised for sometime leading up to the burn. We will also need a peel for adding and removing breads from the oven. If we are going to be making a whole load of dough for bread and pizza we need to be kneading a whole lot. This will take man power.

If you're very keen get in touch, I'm more than happy to share responsibility.

    What is this?

Congratulations! You've stumbled upon something special. Kiez Burn is a platform that allows you to share your dreams.

      Details

    • Do you need electricity from the grid? How much in Watts? * Very little for electric mixing, if we use electric mixing. ~300w

    • Will there be light? Some fairy lights might be used to light the oven during the evening, however I don't plan to use it much later in the day. This remains to be confirmed.

    • Will anything burn? * Yes the oven will be burning wood. Fire precautions will be discussed with someone who understands the potential problems more and those precautions will be put into place.

    • What is your audio footprint? * None. Maybe shouting 'Garlic Bread!'

    • What’s your ecological footprint? Ecology is very important to me, I will make every effort to reduce the impact of my visit. As such I would ask everyone to use organic (bio) produce for their camp food, it's a complicated matter but this can't be a bad start. Practically for the oven space wood will be burnt but not more than is necessary and for a good cause! All the ashes and other waste will be disposed of accordingly.
